The Indoor Playground for Man and Boy

Residential House Designed by Hsi-Chen Cheng

This residential project is the dream home meticulously planned by the female owner for the boy and the man in the house; the entire design fuses the male owner’s dignity with the little boy’s childlike innocence, using the neutral gray color with the warm wood pattern to penetrate through two types of different tones, such that the open-style venue structures the dad’s audio-visual paradise as well as the little boy’s play area.

The Indoor Playground for Man and Boy, designed by Hsi-Chen Cheng, is a unique residential house that combines the dignity of the male owner with the childlike innocence of the little boy. The design features a neutral gray color palette with warm wood patterns, creating a harmonious blend of two different tones. This open-style venue caters to both the dad's audio-visual paradise and the little boy's play area, making it a perfect space for the entire family.

One of the standout features of this design is the master bedroom, which serves as a private space for the female owner to relax and enjoy tranquility. It ingeniously satisfies the various needs of all family members, providing a peaceful retreat within the home.

The open-style public space for the living and dining rooms is based on refreshing wood patterns, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The use of dark and pale wood colors adds depth and warmth to the space. The living room features a natural wood-patterned ceiling, symbolizing a forest tree house and serving as a partition for the space. The irregularly shaped shoe cabinet and television wall, stacked like LEGO blocks, are assembled using gray marble, steel-brushed veneer, and white laminate, blending seamlessly into the living room elevation with different materials.

The design specifications of this space are 120 square meters, providing ample room for the family to live and play. The central island-style kitchen counter design extends the linear axis of the dining room space, enhancing spatial functions and meeting the needs of the female owner.

The tranquility of the dining room is achieved through the use of a dark wood-colored dining table, complemented by a chandelier resembling Ferrero Rocher and macaron-colored dots handles. The application of Lotos wall, featuring a primitive texture, and a blackboard wall for children to doodle freely, adds a touch of fun to the space. Various accessories bring in vibrant colors and energetic vitality, while the gray tone balances the overall design.

The design team, led by Hsi-Chen Cheng, overcame creative, technical, and research challenges to create a cohesive and functional space. The master bedroom utilizes cozy warm color tones to create consistency within the spatial design. Wood quality texture is used to embellish the stress given out by the crossbeams, and the remaining space under the beams is transformed into a small dressing area, maximizing the use of space.

The Indoor Playground for Man and Boy was completed in September 2018 in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. The design showcases the fusion of elegance and playfulness, creating a unique and inviting home for the entire family.
